What is so bad about AoC and it's Launch?

So I was going to post this on the official Conan boards, but I wanted to get the opinions of None/former AoC players also. I figured IGN's Forums were probably one fo the best spots to go aside from Massivley or MMORPG.

Ok for me and many around me AoC was one of the smoothest launches we ever experienced. The game ran amazing on our old and new systems. And we had nonestop fun for almost 6 weeks. Not even Final Fantasy games were able to provide me with that kind of fun and content for $50 I have over 100 hours logged on my Main and 2-40 hours for each of my alts. Totaling upwards of 200 hours for me.

I have not been this deep into ANY MMO since EQ2 and WoW were released back to back. And when that happend I divided my time between the two. So even if the content did drop down I got my $50 bucks worth and my $15 for the following month... now as for continued playability for more months to come, that's where conan drags for me and makes me question giving my $15 to Funcom. Seeing them Avoid problems makes me less likely, and seeing them not focus on fixing the real problems reall drops the likely hood to nill.

Despite Higherlevel Content Issues, which I have run into with ALL MMO's within a year of release... Conan was as close to a perfect launch as they get... Again for My friends and I.

So when I first read about these release problems I just thought it was a few whiners and trolls who were going to quiet down after a few days. Then it got a little worse as the Gameing Sites began to report on the HORRIBLE launch... I still thought maybe it was all they had to focus on and it would all blow over... well I quickely set aside such childish thoughts and ehre it is 4 months later and people claim the problems are still there...

Maybe we A.K.A. (My friends and I) are just to naive. Heck None of us like WoW at all.. .It's a very good MMO, but we don't see how it got the numbers it has deeper games like EQ, and EQ2 seemed so much better. We also do not understand how AoC is getting SO much bad media and complaints for it's launch when WoW and EQ2 and MANY other MMO's launches were so much worse... SO DRASTICALLY WORSE. EQ2 and WoW were nearly unplayable for months after launch. I have the account history to prove it. Blizzard gave many of it's users free days and weeks all over the place after launch to apologize for the OBSCENE down times and Crashes.

Heck I remember the initial problems were the High system Requirements. 1GB of RAM at the time was INSANEly high. EQ ran like a god on 512 and at the time 512 was ALOT of memory. so having to upgrade to 1GB felt like such a waste of money to do it for only 1-2 products that would utilize it. and despite all this The MMO Community and Reporters have spoken and the Conan Launch is Worse?

I am not naive I understand that this may have simply been PURE LUCK that we all had an excellent experience with Conan. Had I crashed to desktop every hour on the hour I still would not have considered this a bad launch... cause that is the norm for an MMO launch. That was the case with WoW and EQ2 they had much worse launches then conan as far as Server and Program Stability go. I did not have to perform any upgrades to get Conan to run at low or medium settings... WoW and EQ2 (I say again) I had to upgrade my RAM just to play the game with most things off...

It just feels like either everyone feels like picking on AoC, Everyone forgot HOW BAD MMO launches really are... or maybe AoC just has a more fastidious player base then other MMO's

So please tell me Players / Former PLayers / None Players... Why is Conan SO BAD?

Why is being held under such a powerfull magnifying glass when others were so much worse?

Why are WoW, EQ2, AO, DAoC, Lineage2, and so many others allowed to be broken to nearly unplayable, with 3 months of server crashes, and BSoD's and get nearly no attention, but AoC is lashed and hung for not running at 60FPS.

OK OK So I downplayed the AoC issues and exagerated some of the others (But I did not exagerate by much. I meant what I said about WoW.)

Finally an Honest Review from . . .

Finally an honest review from somebody who thinks and plays like I do.

This guy ended up giving AoC an 8 out of 10 so it is obvious he did not trash the game or have an axe to grind. With some of the things he said I was kind of surprised it scored so high in the end.

I cancelled my subscription about 7 weeks ago. So I’m no rabid fan; nor am I a hater. I am someone that liked enough things about the game that I’d like to see some of the things I did not like fixed.

Feeling like this it was nice to read a review that touched on some of the things I did not like as well as things I did.

“As with any MMO it all begins with the character creator and right off the bat there is a head-slappingly obvious oversight evident in Age of Conan: there are 12 classes but only eight available character slots. In order to try out every class you'll have to create characters that will later be deleted to make room for more. “

This first quote touches on something I saw as a problem. Albeit as a future problem. While I did use all my available character slots; only half were toons I actually played after reaching the ‘Trader’ in Tortage. The rest where made because of the games woeful lack of storage space. Especially if trying to sell items.

“The combo-system may tarnish just a tad as you level but the combat is always fun to watch”

I could not agree more with this statement. I never understood the people that where touting this as some new great combat system that was no longer just pushing buttons. Pushing buttons on cue when prompted but not before is precisely what AoC is. DAoC had a much less button mashing combat system. AoC you have to mash up to four bottons as prompted to execute one attack but mashing them in order AS PROMPTED is all that matters. In DAoC you only hit one button to do an attack but many attacks where best executed after a successful other attack or after an action of your opponent. Some could only be used under this scenario. My champion had attacks he could only use after he parried. Or after the person I was fighting parried or blocked. So it was not just mash button four. Mash button two. I had to know which attach best set up another attack and watch to see if I parried or my opponent did to give me an opening for one of those attacks. But I digress I did not wish to make a post talking about other games.

So another quote from the review.

“One of the reasons we like to give MMOs a few months to ripen on the vine before review is because these games are incredibly complicated and it takes some time in the wild to iron out all the problems. That being said we can't turn a blind eye to bugs and client problems forever. During my first week of Ager of Conan I had very few crashes but since my return to the game for the review I've seen a few more stability problems tied to a client memory leak. These crashes are almost always preceded by something I've been calling the Grim Grey Map...It seems to happen like clockwork after a few hours of play. It's worrisome to see the client get less stable overtime and a number of problematic bugs still exist in the game. ”

This was one of my biggest problems with this game. Patches instead of fixing existing problems kept making things worse. The patch that made it impossible to move until work around’s and partial fixes where posted by fellow players just amazed me. Funcom never once acknowledged this took place and the hot bars remained broken for at least a month. The last patch before my account expired actually fixed this. It was not in the patch notes. Guess its tough to say you finally fixed something if you never acknowledged it was broken.

There was a patch that Funcom said fixed the memory leak problem. For many it did not, for me however for a week or two I actually had no memory leak crashes. Sadly they came back with a later patch. The same patch that temporally fixed my memory leak introduced me to the hard lock up crash where the only thing to do was to cut the power to my computer. Again there was no mention of this problem by Funcom and a post by a fellow sufferer fixed this problem for me. Though I understand the fix did not work for some.

I called the grey map leading to the memory leak crash the “Grey Map of Death” so I like that this reviewer also nick named it. Below is listed the comp the reviewer was using.

Review Hardware: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 768 MB NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GTX, Windows XP.

The fact that someone working at Tom’s Hardware running a computer with those stats had this problem should silence the people that claim only people with crappy comps or who don’t know how to set them up and maintain them had the memory leak.

One more quote from the review.

"What I Didn't Like: Lack of continuous geography and fast-travel over great distances; uninspired weapon and armor design; bugs and client instability still resident after three months; low-level content gets repetitive over multiple characters; not enough character slots to try every class."

Again I could not agree more. I really did not like the ‘lack of continuous geography’. “Little boxes Little boxes all made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.”

Nintendo Brings Shogi to WiiWare

A first party title that will probably stay in Japan

Great news, Nintendo fans! Nintendo has released its latest WiiWare game over in Japan. The bad news is revealed by the title: Tsuushin Taikyoku Hayazashi Shogi Sandan. Hidden within all the moon talk is one of those dreaded words from the Japanese game market: shogi. That's right, Nintendo's latest WiiWare title is the download service's latest shogi game.

Hayazashi Shogi Sandan boasts online play via Wi-Fi Connect as well as offline play for two players and versus the CPU. Those who do chose to go against the Wii hardware will find advanced AI routines through the TACOS AI system that was developed at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Solo players have a couple of exclusive modes as well. The game includes a shogi course for beginners, teaching everything players need to know about the chess killah. Also included is a tsumeshogi mode, where players can test their skills at over 200 problems. This mode offers problems for both beginners and advanced players.

This latest Nintendo branded WiiWare title is available as of today for Japanese Wii owners. Nintendo is asking its usual 1000 WiiPoints. The title will likely stay in Japan, so shogi fans should dig out that import Wii system.
